Body Confidence After Babies

It’s not uncommon for women to have body confidence issues after giving birth. There’s nothing quite like childbirth. It’s the miracle of life in action. It’s also one of the most stressful things that can happen to a woman’s body. You can’t avoid the consequences of pregnancy, even if you really want to. In the wake of all those hormonal changes, who can blame them? However, there’s no reason this state of mind should persist long after childbirth. Here are some ways to regain your body confidence.

Remember that there’s a buffer period

Pregnancy can take its toll on a woman’s body. Even when you’re dedicated to your body and its image, you can’t prevent some of the changes that pregnancy introduces. Despite this, you need to remember that these changes are not permanent.

Your body might be slow and aching now, but this phase will pass and you’ll get right back to your normal routine. Your body is going to follow suite and it’s going to be easier to get back to exercising and feeling better after a while. I think the most important thing to remember is that we are all different and that is to be celebrated! You must do what is right for you, both physically and emotionally.

Relax those aching joints

If you feel like your joints aren’t as tough as they were before pregnancy, it’s not just your imagination. During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called Relaxin, which softens ligaments and increases flexibility. This is a necessary change for easier childbirth, but it’s not going to positively affect your movement and stability.

You’re probably going to feel like your joints are wobbly and unstable for a while after giving birth. This is why you shouldn’t just jump into any very physically demanding activities. Instead, start with some light stretching and avoid movements that are too “jerky”.

Help your pelvic floor muscles heal

Childbirth puts enormous stress on your body. Especially when it comes to pelvic floor muscles. It’s not uncommon for them to become weak right after childbirth. Many women will want to jump right into an exercise routine to help them recover their strength.

However, this might not be the best course of action. You shouldn’t put too much pressure on your pelvic floor soon after giving birth. During this period, the pelvic floor is still too vulnerable to be subjected to exercise routines like pilates or yoga. Instead, start off slow. Kegel exercises are the best possible focused exercises for your pelvis. They won’t inhibit healing and they’ll help bring some strength to this muscle group. After a while, you can move onto full-body exercises that incorporate pelvic floor muscles.

Take it step by step

Getting back into exercise isn’t such an easy task after giving birth to a child. After your sixth week check with a health professional, you might be aching to get some physical activity back in your life. You can’t jump right into it, but there are some steps you can take to make the transition easier. As with anything else, it’s important that you take baby steps when getting back to exercising. You might as well find a mum and baby exercise class in your area. It can give you the opportunity to bond with your baby while you do some light exercise.

If you don’t feel like going out of the house, you can always find some custom exercises for you and your baby online. It’s a bit harder to learn on your own, but any mother can manage it with a little practice. Just make sure to keep an eye on your baby while doing these exercises. Toys are great for keeping your baby entertained. With the help of a bit of distraction, you’re going to find it pretty easy to deal with the workouts with your child.

Appreciate your body

It’s easy to forget the positive aspects of pregnancy. After all, everything that comes to mind is the negative effects on your body and state of mind. The hormonal changes really take their toll and leave you feeling bitter and vulnerable. However, consider what pregnancy proves to you.

Your body is capable of creating and nurturing an entire human being. It creates life and brings you happiness and purpose in your life. When you take this into account, it’s easy to forget about a couple of hard months before and after childbirth. They are a small price to pay for what the pregnancy provides you with. Not to mention, your body is pretty tough for enduring all of this and ending up with hardly a scratch to show for it.

Conclusion

No woman goes through pregnancy unscathed. It’s easy to forget that pregnancy isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. However, when you get down to the important things, temporary bodily changes stop seeming like a big deal. Still, body confidence is something that should be worked on extensively after childbirth. It’s a step by step process, so make sure you remember what your body has created and don’t be too hard on yourself.
